The Austrian Society of Aviation Medicine is an association of aeromedical examiners,
aviation psychologists, medical specialists and aviation professionals working to create,
deliver and support aerospace medicine training. ASAM’s goal is to deliver core

Dear friends, colleagues and avimed wingmen!

The teams of the Austrian Society of Aviation Medicine and Aeromedical Center Salzburg are coordinating speakers and subject matter experts for our Fall Refresher Training, Salzburg Aerospace Medicine Seminar. The date of the meeting will be Friday October 23rd to Saturday October 24th.

As in the past, we strived to combine operative and medical subjects that provide value and add context to the aeromedical evaluation process. This combination of topics has proven to enhance participant engagement and facilitate acquiring useful knowledge and skills for applied aviation medicine.

Young and Old: the recent introduction of the Age 60 HEMS regulations is a good focal point for aviation medicine assessments of the aging pilots, and of young pilots. The specific challenges presented to our young candidates during the COVID pandemic of 2020 – 2022 have impacted a generation. Young candidates are now frequently presenting with conditions and mental health constellations that have their roots in this challenging time.

Contributions by the regulatory authorities are always highly valued by our participants and we would like to highlight EAMR, the diabetes protocol and general guidance from EASA and Austro Control (and any other EASA regulatory authority wishing to contribute) this year.

The head of AeMC Salzburg’s US satellite location, Rick Roth, will join us live and provide the perspective of a senior FAA and HIMS examiner on our daily work as well as his experience with the launch of EASA aeromedical evaluation and certification in the US. There is value in reviewing one’s own work habits from a different perspective.

ATCO-related topics shall be included as well, to help meet the specific refresher training requirements of AMEs performing Class 3 aeromedical evaluations.

Several airmen will be presenting, providing perspective to the aeromedical assessment process. They all have one-of-a-kind aviation backgrounds and can provide unique context to help AMEs understand the challenges of special missions as well as the common threads shared by aviators around the planet.

The onsite coffee breaks and lunches will be great opportunities to reacquaint and update each other with all that is special to our lives and our work.

Other highlights of our meeting will be the guided tour of Red Bull’s Hangars 7 and 8 (spoiler – the groundbreaking for the construction of a third hangar began this spring) and our AME Wingman’s Dinner at the Restaurant Kuglhof. There we will all have an opportunity to meet, share experiences, refresh old and make new acquaintances.

The meeting will be held in a hybrid format allowing for both live and online participation again this year. The conference language is English to promote international participation.
